Arts & Culture SHSM

“Arts education aids students in skills needed in the workplace: flexibility, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive for excellence.”
– Joseph M. Calahan, Director of Cooperate Communications, Xerox Corporation

SHSM Pamphlet – Barrydowne College

The Arts and Culture SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace. Our Arts and Culture focus is on Visual Arts, Music and Indigenous Studies. This focus is achieved through the selection of the four major credits in the bundle and cooperative education.

In addition to course selection we offer certifications that will help you achieve your red seal in SHSM. You will be able to access First Aid, WHMIS, an ICE (Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Creativity) Challenge with Norcat, and you will be invited to work with local artists to gain certifications. Past certifications include leadership at Science North, advanced techniques in watercolour on yupo with local artist Brigitte Bere, advanced techniques in photography with local photographer Adam Grose, and Portfolio techniques with Sarah during our first Toronto Field Trip.

If you’re interested in joining our SHSM program please see Ms Sarah in room 1481 to determine if you are eligible.
